For Brides: Why You Should do an Engagement Session

Kingwood wedding photographer - Why you should have engagement portraits taken by your wedding photographer

One thing I commonly hear from brides as they are planning their wedding and weighing options for photography is the question “Do we really need engagement photos?” Often times, engagement photos can be seen as just an extra cost – I strongly disagree!

Now, I’m not here to tell you you absolutely have to have them or your wedding/marriage won’t be a success. That’d be ridiculous.

I am here, however, to tell you the reasons why I think you should WANT to have engagement photos taken.

1. Yes, it’s nice to be able to have a great, professional image of you and your fiancé to use on your save the dates if you’re sending them out. Definitely a plus and sets the tone for your wedding – especially if the images look great AND capture the spirit of your relationship.

2. Getting professional portraits taken isn’t something that many of us do regularly throughout the year. For some people, the last real portraits they have are from their graduation, or from being a part of a friend/family member’s wedding. Getting high quality images that highlight this incredible time in your lives is of value. You’ll be able to look back at these years from now and remember the excitement, joy & love that filled this crazy season of wedding planning. Bonus: you’ll have great portraits of you at this age in something other than wedding attire!

3. Wedding planning can be stressful. (If you’re feeling that now, take a second to click through my To the Newly Engaged series… Seriously, I’ll wait.) Taking some time out for the two of you to be together and not be talking about color palates, seating charts or bridal party gifts is of value. You get to just take some time to really focus on each other, have some fun & enjoy yourselves!

4. When I get to spend the extra time with you during the engagement shoot, it allows me to get to know you better. While this may not seem like a huge deal to some brides & grooms to know your wedding vendors & for them to know you, in the case of your photographer, it is so important! Of all the vendors you select for your day, as the photographer, I am the person who is with you the most. I want my brides & grooms to be comfortable with me being by your side, and knowing that I’m there for y’all as your begin your marriage.

5. Most importantly, getting engagement photos done gives you the chance to become comfortable in front of my camera. If you’ve gone through an hour or two of taking photos with me, you’ll already be familiar with some of the poses & the way I will guide you/talk you through things during the bride & groom portraits. This eliminates the “awkward phase” that happens on pretty much every shoot from your wedding day photos!

So as you select your wedding photography package, I hope you get excited about including an engagement session!

I’d love it if you would take a second to share this post with one person you know who could benefit from it!

Newborn Portraits – Addie

Y’all I’m so excited to get to introduce you to the absolutely adorable Addie! I got to go photograph her at 11 days old, and let me tell you – Amanda and Steve seemed like pros at the whole parenting thing!

I just love the way they both look at sweet Addie, and she was just a little dream baby. Seeing Amanda holding her daughter with such grace and joy was a beautiful thing to see, and y’all know I’m a sucker for seeing a daddy holding his baby girl. Gets me every time!

Dear Pumpkin – 10 months

Sweet girl,

You’re 10 months old, this post is a little late going up, and I completely missed your 9 month letter. Between you deciding to grow up really fast all of a sudden & us moving to Houston, that 9 month letter got lost in the mix, but my girl, I am so in love with you!

You have been such a trooper through the move, and although I know you don’t really understand the difference, you’ve been so good about being in a different house with a different routine. You’re still even sleeping really well (minus a nap here or there) despite the fact that your crib is still in our old house and you’ve been in the pack-n-play.

Your bottom two teeth are in, and you’ve allllllmost got matching ones on the top. I think they’ll break through any day now. And even though I know they must be hurting you, you’re still just as smiley as ever.

You love to scream still, and have gotten very curious. You love to tear up the magazines at Oma & Pops’ house & try to hurry into the bathroom or your sister’s room any chance you get.

Your little voice is so cute & the sounds you make almost sound like you’re trying to yodel. It cracks us up a lot & makes me anxious to hear you call me mama, but it also makes me wish that time would stand still because I know you won’t be making that sound forever.

You’re doing good with trying new foods, although you make it pretty clear you aren’t a fan of any kind of chicken, noodle, rice chunks in your baby food. You like watermelon, sweet potatoes, avocado & bananas.

One of the biggest things is that you’re walking soooo well! You’re practically running now. I think we must have cheered for you a lot at the beginning because you tend to clap your hands whenever you’ve walked a good distance. Keep that, sweet girl. Work hard & don’t get over-confident, but I hope you always praise yourself when praise is due.

Of course our little month stickers don’t really stand a chance anymore with you… I’ve got to be pretty quick to get any shots of them actually on your tummy!

You crack yourself up now, and that little laugh is just too cute, Pumpkin. It’s such a fun stage when I get to see you starting to pick up on other’s reactions and how my laughter often leads to more giggles from you.

You absolutely love this little ladybug, and you also love to grab a hold of Winston’s fur & walk around with him. Bless his heart, he is so patient with you! Walking with him like that always makes you scream & laugh, and it looks like you think you’re riding a chariot around the house.

I’ve gotta get creative with those stickers! But you gave me a rare moment of stillness to snap this next one.

My little sunshine girl, thank you as always for the joy you bring into our lives. You’ve made Peanut the best big sister, and I’ve been loving watching you two interact more and more. She loves you to pieces, and I hope you grow up to know and appreciate how fortunate you are to have a big sister who loves you so much.

Thank you for letting me be your mama. I love you, Pumpkin!
