For Brides: Father Daughter First Look

Kingwood wedding photographer - Why you should include a Father-Daughter first look portraits in your wedding day timeline

I’ve shared some of my reasons for why I think a First Look is a great option on your wedding day. It’s a great way to get amazing portraits & have a powerful, emotional moment in a rare slice of alone-time, just to name a few.

But there’s another first look that I think should be considered as well. The father-of-the-bride seeing his girl in her dress.

I may be a little partial to this because of my own family history & wedding day experience… It ended up being a tradition that for any of my school dances, my dad never saw my dress until I was all done up and ready to go. He’d see it for the first time with hair done, make up done.

I knew after all of those middle school and high school nights of seeing his reaction to me in my dress, that I wanted it to be the same on my wedding day. So true to tradition, my dad didn’t get to see my dress until the big day, and I made sure to request that my photographer get photos of his reaction & that moment for the two of us.

My dad has always asked me “Wanna know a secret?” and when I’d respond yes, he’d tell me “I love you.” (Yes – I have the best dad!)

So when I walked up to him & had to say something to let him know to turn around, I just asked him “Wanna know a secret?” …Cue the tears!

Outside of all of the little personal traditions that made that moment so special for my dad and me, it was a great way to honor him, the first man of my life, on the day I became a wife. He did so much to show me what to look for in a partner by the way he loves my mom and the way he raised me, and it was important to me that he feel loved on that day too.

Many brides have a special connection with their fathers, and this is such an incredible way to celebrate that relationship! It is so worth the additional 15 minutes in the timeline, trust me.

And if I happen to be photographing your father daughter first look in the future, just pretend to ignore the tears that’ll probably be in my eyes afterward!

Engagements – Erin & Elliott

I snuck out of Kingwood to head up to Nacogdoches to take Erin & Elliott’s engagement photos in between packing up our house & trying to clear stuff out in a garage sale, and y’all, let me tell you. I am SO glad these two were a part of that weekend!

I love the mix of laid-back & natural, combined with romantic & classy. And these two were so much fun! They’ve adventured together (got engaged after skydiving – what?!?!), and you can just see how they push each other to live fuller lives. And that’s the best, right?

As the sun came up, we had the arboretum to ourselves (minus one photobombing dog), and these two were killing it from shot one!

I always love getting to photograph couples who are just as comfortable laughing with one another as they are getting in close for quieter, more intimate moments. There’s just something about being able to see the full range of their relationship within their images that makes my heart happy!

The morning light streaming through the trees was so pretty! And it just seemed to wrap these two up in it. Love love love.

This. This right here. When they look at each other, it’s like all of Nacogdoches froze. This is the kind of look that tells me they’re meant for each other. They’re a couple in it for the long haul, and wouldn’t want anyone else by their side. And in that moment, I was just so honored to get to be the one to help that look, that moment, that memory stick around.

And can we please just take a second and applaud Elliott on this ring?!?! So gorgeous!

This was seriously one of the first few shots of the day. Pros!

Erin went to Texas A&M and Elliott went to Tech (wreck ’em!!), and I love that they wanted their class rings to be incorporated into the shoot. Only way it could have been better is if there were two Double T’s on either side of that diamond!

At this point, as he reached over for Erin’s hand, I barely heard him tell her that walking along this street was the first time he held her hand. Such a sweet thing to remember, and I love that they went back to the very beginning as they head into a new beginning as husband and wife.

Erin & Elliott, thank you for spending your Saturday morning with me, and I hope you know how happy I am for y’all! I hope to hear all about your future adventures together! Congrats!!
